How do you know as a collection manager or conservator what kind of photography is present in the art collection? How do you know how to store the photo, exhibit it, whether a work can still be restored and what kind of degradation phenomena you can expect? What is the correct terminology for the photo?

To be able to identify the progress of a photograph and the substrate, specialist knowledge is required, which is often not present in museums. Within the Photography Project is, among other things, a decision tree been developed, so that managers, registrars and conservators can identify a large part of their photography collections themselves in the future, monitor them and take conservation measures where necessary.

You can find all the research, information of processes, substrates and finishing techniques in the online tool. Terms were composed by researchers, conservators and other professionals working at several art collections.
